Only about 50 known copies of the first-edition 1611 King James Version of the Bible exist, and Hardin-Simmons University now has one, thanks to a Dallas couple. Dr. Charles Tandy and his wife, Roena, also donated a collection of other Bibles, leaves, fragments and volumes of secondary literature, some dating to 1521.Dr. Tandy, a 1949 graduate of the university and a former Dallas City Council member, said he has been collecting rare Bibles since the mid-1960s.
He said he hopes the volumes will inspire others.
"The history of the early English Bible is such an amazing, captivating story," he said. "I'm hoping people will be attracted to them, perhaps want to see what one of these books looks like."
